CURENT ISSUES OF OPHTHALMOLOGY, a Sientific and Practical Conference of Ophthalmologists of Chernivtsi, Ivano-Frankivsk, Ternopil, Khmelnitsk Regions of Ukraine was held in Chernivtsi on the 20th -21st of September 2017. This event was held by Filatov Eye Disease and Tissue Therapy Institute, NAMS of Ukraine together with Bukovinian State Medical University and supported by Chernivtsi Region State Administration and City Council, the Department of Health of Chernivtsi Regional State Administration in accordance with the plan of organizational measures of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, NAMS of Ukraine and the Register of Congresses, Symposia and Scientific-Practical Conferences to be held in 2017.

336 delegates participated in the conference representing Chernivtsi, Odessa, Vinnytsya, Volyn, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Zhytomyr, Zaporizhzhya, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kirovograd, Lviv, Ternopil, Kharkiv, Cherkasy, Chernigiv, and Khmelnitsky Regions of Ukraine and the city of Kyiv. 

104 scientific papers including lectures were published in the Proceedings of the Conference.

36 lectures and reports were presented by scientists from Odesa, Chernivtsi, Vinnytsya, Kyiv, Lviv, Kharkiv, and Khmelnitsky.

On the first day of the conference, at the first lecture session, leading Ukraine’s experts in the field of ophthalmology presented their lectures. Among the lectures professors Ya. I.Penishkevich, M.V. Panchenko, O.O.Putienko, S.A. Yakimenko, S.O.Rykov; doctors of medical sciences Zborovska O.V., Konovalova N.V., Shargorodska I.V., Maletskyi A.P., Krasnovid T.A. and candidate of medical sciences M.A. Karliichuk. The lectures were on treatment of glaucoma, non-infectious uveitis, ocular tuberculosis, macular tears; surgical treatment of severe burn and trauma of the eye; reconstructive surgery in the eyelid, orbit, and periorbital area. At the second session, reports were presented on the use of cornea substitutes of collagen and pig's cornea in the treatment of corneal pathology, treatment of neurotrophic keratopathy and pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy. Own experience in the treatment of retinal detachment and proliferative diabetic retinopathy was demonstrated. A number of reports were devoted to glaucoma, a disease leading to profound disability and blindness.

The second day was completed by lectures and reports covering issues of childhood ophthalmopathology, binocular vision disorder and refractive errors.  The leading experts of Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy Professor V.I. Serdyuchenko, Doctor of Medical Sciences I. M. Boychuk, I. M. Bushuieva, Candidates of Medical Sciences T. A. Sorochinskaya, N. B. Trofimova shared their own experience in this area. 

As a result of discussion and shared experiences the following recommendations were accepted:

1.      To introduce into the clinical practice new techniques and principles of ocular pathology treatment.

2.      To provide annual screening of patients with diabetes mellitus with a view to timely detect diabetic retinopathy.

3.      To provide early referral of patients with uveitis, iridocyclites, keratoconjections to Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy in order to clarify the diagnosis and to determine the treatment tactics.

4.      To improve the dispensary supervision of patients with severe ophthalmic pathology: neoplasms of the eye and orbit, glaucoma, retinal pathology, diabetic eye defects, and sequelae of eye injuries.

5.      To provide early diagnosis and treatment to the infant population with binocular vision disorders, refractive anomalies and amblyopia.

6.      To introduce into the practice a complex treatment for refractive anomalies using diode laser stimulation in combination with nutrient therapy.

7.      To introduce modern medical-diagnostic and clinical technologies for the purpose of early detection of ocular tuberculosis.

8.      To implement a modern approach to the treatment of vitreomacular syndrome in order to early perform intravitreal interventions and to prevent the development of   idiopathic macular rupture.

9.      To provide the children's population of all regions of Ukraine, especially infants and children in rural areas, with preventive examinations and to improve their quality.

10.    In order to improve the professional level of ophthalmologists and to improve their skills, it is important to continue the tradition of annual interregional conferences for ophthalmologists from 3-4 regions of Ukraine under the direction of Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of  NAMS of Ukraine. It was decided to hold All-Ukrainian Scientific and Practical Conference of Ophthalmologists devoted to the 80th anniversary of Ukrainian Society of Ophthalmologists in Vinnytsya on September 12-13, 2018.
