In the course of the research work we studied the effect of ultrasonic phacoemulsification of age-related cataract on the morphometric parameters of the central region of the retina and visual acuity in patients who had been earlier diagnosed with age — related macular degeneration.

It was revealed that the foveola was the most sensitive area of the central region of the retina to phacoemul-sification. The reaction of the foveola in the form of macular edema was established in a month after successful phacoemulsification, both in patients with age — related maculopathy and patients with age- related macular degeneration. The degree of severity is directly dependent on the stage of degenerative changes. It is established that the thickness of the retina a month after the surgery lasted for 3 months in patients with dry form of AMD and continued to increase in patients with wet form of AMD. After six months the thickness of the retina returned to its initial level.

There were detected risk factors for progression of macular degeneration and visual impairment in the postoperative period of 0.1 or more. The development of macular edema as well as its duration depends on the severity and stage of macular degeneration.
